Modular elements with flexible dimensions
Notions of Place installation is composed of a projected non-narrative video surrounded by domestic furnishings handed down from the artist’s family, re-upholstered with printed photographic imagery, which was sourced from the Malibu and her own home fires. The arrangement is an inviting space, a reinterpretation of shelter, one that proposes that what can be seen as personal tragedy could instead welcome contemplation and reflection of universal themes. The installation was part of a larger Kasmer curated show originally presented at the Angels Gate Cultural Center. The realized artworks strove to point out that “Place” can be a refuge, a home holding our values and dreams in safe harbor, or it can also be defined by a border or walls holding us back from a new life. In ways that are both spiritual and physical, the Notions of Place works explored the contours of the artist’s experience of the world.
