Doodle and Dream is an exhibition, where the artists access and reflect the subconscious, meditative and sometimes non-conscious state of mind, in their creations. I have always marveled at a story of Salvador Dali, who took exceedingly short naps to be inspired by and captured the visions of that space between sleep and pure consciousness - the hypnagogic state - that inspired his imagery. My co-curator, Michael Miller, and I selected artists for Doodle and Dream, who are quite varied but all share their creative expressions that celebrate the transitional state of minds.

The Cilka series of photographs are part of a project which reinterprets an archive of Kasmer's photographically printed wearables. During the last ten years, her images taken in nature have been applied to textiles and then transformed into wearable art and furnishings. These are independent fine art objects that often act as an element within her works. The standalone photographs as well as crafted art pieces also embody personal upcycling that pay homage to and honors the memory of her holocaust survivor designer mother.Notion of Place

Closing Day Reception/ Artists Talk
Notions of Place will examine what it means to inhabit a complexity of different spaces that may be physical realities or
imagined environments. They proffer metaphors of exchange between nature and human action, drawing on dreams,
memories, and the spaces in between, disintegrating commonly held social views that have acted as fences around our
homes. The artists will be responsive to the diverse community that makes up San Pedro, while also keeping in mind the
importance that it is home to the largest port of international traffic in the US. Filtered through social, cultural, and geopolitical
frames, the artists explore relationships and systems of the urban, suburban, exurban, and rural landscape. Their
responses will ultimately transcend the singular city to reflect what one might call the Covid pandemic migration as well. As a
whole society shifts its notion of home, so its idea of place transforms too.
Each of the artists in the exhibition articulate different facets of what we call place. In it one can feel safe: a home, or a
country can be a refuge holding our values and dreams in safe harbor. Or it can be defined by a border or a wall holding
us back from a new life. In ways that are both spiritual and physical, Notions of Place explores the contours of the artist’s
experience of the world.Book Launch at Birdie G's Bergamot Station, Santa Monica

Blind Courier Exhibition at the Brand Library & Art Center
Curators Hilary Baker and Lauren Kasmer originally conceived of Blind Courier as an homage to Los Angeles. Expanding on this idea, they selected artists whose work casts a wider net beyond the boundaries of our city. In this exhibition nine artists bring to the Brand gallery their relationship to a place, their perspectives filtered through memory, imagination, and research. The artists represented offer a compelling mix of work by documenting, re-defining and re-envisioning dwellings, neighborhoods, and landmarks.

Art Share-LA"What does the future of Los Angeles arts landscape look like through the eyes of some of its most respected artists? We ask some of our favorites to choose the promising artist they would most like to exhibit with. The results are a vibrant, diverse cross section of this region’s creative output–spanning across painting, video, textile, photography, drawing, mixed media collage, and more." - Art Share-LA

As curious human beings, we cannot help but ponder the question of how we come to be here. So while there are many traditions and beliefs that can separate us as humans, I prefer to look at where we share a commonality in our biology.
Re:Creation is a mixed media with video installation which focuses on a relationship to nature and refers to my own meditative practice while acknowledging a deep respect for physics as well as metaphysical tenets. - Lauren Kasmer
