Firebird is an artwork inspired by indigenous American creation tales of the Hummingbird as well as the Slavic myth featuring Maryushka and Kaschei, loosely based on the Phoenix legend. This site-specific configuration provided the opportunity to address the historic and architectural significance of the alternative location. Set amidst the industrial and expansive structure, flooded with light from towering glass block windows and strewn with functional and historic electrical generators and controls, the environment is as much the center of attention as any artwork imposed. Firebird pays homage to the hydroelectric space; a pseudo 'room' is placed near the 'control room' of this power plant, and is constructed with two walls of open framework. From within the room one can view the artwork while simultaneously observing the exposed architectural designation outside. The Firebird installation in the guise of a domestic setting centers around video works, environments complemented by redesigned nature audio compositions, textile ceiling and furnishing coverings, and photographic macro metal prints.
